Sylhet Bureau:
A defamation case worth Tk 50 crore has been filed against the national daily Daily Inquilab on charges of publishing false information.
On Monday (September 29), the case was filed at the Sylhet Metropolitan Magistrate (1st) Court by Advocate Shamim Ahmed, a lawyer of the Bangladesh Supreme Court and Sylhet Judge Court. A total of 7 people, including Inquilab editor AM Bahauddin and Bishwanath Upazila representative Abdus Salam, have been named as accused in the case. Additional PP Advocate Abdul Mukit Chowdhury Opi of the Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court in Sylhet confirmed the filing of the case.
The case was filed in the wake of the news published on September 27 in the 9th column of the ‘dainik inqilab’ newspaper under the headline “Attempt to acquire private property worth crores: Tension in Bishwanath”.
In the case, Advocate Shamim mentioned that the published news presented the hereditary property as the property of the government’s private account. He mentioned that the plaintiff has been defamed through this.
During the conversation, Advocate Shamim Ahmed, the plaintiff in the case, said, “Journalism is a noble profession. But if someone’s reputation is damaged by yellow journalism in the name of it, then there is no option but to take refuge in the court. The news published against me is false, purposeful and planned. I want justice through the court.
