Mirza Mahmud Canal re-excavation begins
The implementation of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s development promises has begun, even before the election ink is wiped off voters’ fingers, said Adv. M. Ruhul Kuddus Talukder Dulu, Whip and MP for Natore-2.
Speaking as the chief guest at the official inauguration of the Mirza Mahmud Canal re-excavation programme at Kumrul Government Primary School grounds in Baraigram Upazila on Monday, Dulu highlighted the project’s potential benefits.
“This initiative will help preserve environmental balance, store water, promote indigenous fish species, and enable farmers to irrigate their lands. It will also improve the socio-economic conditions of rural communities,” he said.
DuLu also spoke about ongoing government programs. “Family cards are being issued to help farmers access fertilisers, seeds, and pesticides easily. Imams, muezzins, khatibs, and khadems will receive monthly allowances.
Our goal is to ensure good governance and prevent a return to past misrule. No one in the country will be deprived of justice again,” he added.
The ceremony was chaired by Natore Deputy Commissioner Asma Shaheen and attended by Natore-3 MP Principal Md. Anwarul Islam Anu, Natore-4 MP Md. Abdul Aziz, Natore District Additional Superintendent of Police, Md. Iftekharul Alam, District Council Administrator, Md. Rahim Newaz, Water Development Board Superintendent Engineer, Praveen Kumar Goswami, Baraigram Upazila Nirbahi Officer, Laila Jannatul Ferdous, District BNP member, Principal S.M. Lutfar Rahman, and other local leaders. Leaders and workers of Natore district and Baraigram Upazila BNP were also present.
The project has been allocated Tk 2 crore 62 lakh for the re-excavation of the 4.85-kilometre-long canal, stretching from Kamardah village of Joari Union to Khordkachutia via Kumrul. Officials say the initiative will not only enhance irrigation but also create opportunities for fish farming, contributing to the overall development of the region.
