RMG workers block N’ganj road demanding unpaid wages
Garment workers staged a protest by blocking a road in Fatullah, Narayanganj, demanding payment of overdue salaries, overtime wages, and bonuses.
The demonstration took place on Thursday morning (March 12) in the Gabtoli area, where workers of Century Garments blocked the Dhaka-Narayanganj old road in front of their factory.
Due to the blockade, traffic movement on both sides of the road came to a halt, causing a long traffic jam and severe suffering for commuters.
Workers alleged that their salaries have been unpaid for a long time. Despite informing the factory authorities several times, no solution was provided. As a result, they were compelled to take to the streets and enforce the blockade. They also warned that the protest would continue until their unpaid wages are cleared.
Abdul Khalek, a cutting man at the factory, said that the authorities have not paid salaries or overtime wages for the past two months. Although the payment was supposed to be made on Monday, it was not given, forcing workers to launch the protest.
Regarding the incident, Abdul Mannan, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Fatullah Model Police Station, said that workers had blocked the road demanding their unpaid wages, overtime pay, and bonuses.
After receiving the information, police, industrial police, and members of RAB went to the scene and spoke with the workers as well as the factory authorities.
Later, after assurances were given that the workers’ demands would be addressed, the protesters withdrew the road blockade around 11:30 a.m.
