Shreya’s clear statement on discrimination in music industry

Shreya Ghoshal has been a shining name in the Indian music industry for almost two decades. She has won the hearts of the audience with her numerous popular songs.

Recently, she has raised some important questions about the music industry.

In particular, she has expressed her concern about the relatively low number of songs sung by female artists in the list of popular Bollywood songs.

Recently, Shreya Ghoshal spoke openly about the status of women in the Indian music industry while participating in a discussion event.

She believes that this inequality in the music industry is actually a reflection of the reality of society.

Referring to the social structure of India, Shreya said, “This inequality is not just in music, but is a reflection of our society. To be honest, Indian society is still very patriarchal.”

She also said that the matter becomes clear when you look at the popularity lists, not the lists of various programmes or live performances.

In Shreya’s words, “You can tell just by looking at the top songs on the popularity charts.

Tell me, how many songs are sung by female artists? Very few. If you go to the top 50 songs list, you can see that maybe only six or seven songs are sung by female singers. This disparity is really noticeable.”

The singer believes that in the past, female artistes had a greater influence on the Indian music scene.

She cites legendary artistes Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle as examples. “Look at the time of Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle.

They influenced an entire era. In many cases, they were more popular than male artistes and sang countless songs a year

. But now that picture has changed a lot. I think this situation has been going on for the last ten years or so,” she said.

In the same conversation, Shreya also said that she had earlier lent her voice to songs like ‘Chikni Chameli’.

However, from now on, she wants to distance herself from lent her voice to such songs.

According to her, the style of music and the position of artistes are also changing with time.

However, she is optimistic about the future. Shreya believes that with time, this confusion will be overcome and the presence of female artists in the music industry will come back strongly.

She is currently busy with her ‘All Hearts’ world tour. As part of this tour, she will perform in the UK, US and UAE. According to her, through fusion music and new forms of music practice, female singers will regain their lost status.

Shreya’s musical career began with an inspiring one. Born in Murshidabad, West Bengal, she began taking singing lessons from her mother at the age of four.

Later, she also trained in traditional Hindustani classical music. In 2000, at the age of just 16, she participated in Zee TV’s music competition ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa’ and won.

It was there that she caught eyes of director Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Later, she got the opportunity to lend her voice for Aishwarya Rai’s character in film ‘Devdas’.

She received a huge response in her first film with the songs ‘Dolare Dola’ and ‘Bairi Piya’ and won a National Film Award.
