Illegal counters near Sayedabad terminal removed

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has taken a series of measures to ensure safe, comfortable, and hassle-free travel for passengers during the upcoming Eid al-Fitr.

The decisions were made at an emergency meeting held at Nagar Bhaban on Tuesday with DSCC Administrator Mohammad Abdus Salam in chair, reports UNB.

Officials said the city corporation will modernise terminal management, remove illegal ticket counters, and improve infrastructure to reduce passenger difficulties and ease traffic congestion.

Representatives from Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Dhaka Road Transport Bus Owners Association, Sayedabad Inter-District Bus Terminal Transport Owners Association, and Sayedabad Inter-District Bus Terminal Transport Workers Committee attended the meeting.

They said all illegal ticket counters along the road from the slope of Sayedabad bridge to TT Para will be removed after notices are issued within a specified timeframe. Illegal shops inside the terminal will also be evicted through special drives.

Ticket counters inside the terminal will be allocated only to genuine bus companies under a specific policy, coordinated by DSCC, the bus owners’ association, and traffic police.

Authorities said buses will not be allowed to use the terminal as a depot.

Instead, they must use the five designated bus bays, with each bus allowed to wait only 20-30 minutes for passenger boarding to ensure proper use of the terminal and bus bays.

A new information desk and a breastfeeding room will be set up at the terminal for passenger convenience.

Officials have also been instructed to complete ongoing renovation work, repair toilets, and take quick measures to prevent waterlogging ahead of the Eid rush.

Transport owners were asked to ensure that no operator charges passengers more than the government-approved fare during Eid travel.

Meanwhile, the traffic division has been assigned to remove long-abandoned buses inside the terminal to reduce congestion on surrounding roads.

Speaking at the meeting, DSCC Administrator Mohammad Abdus Salam said the city corporation, police, bus owners, and workers will work together to ensure smooth Eid travel and long-term traffic management.

“We will implement these coordinated decisions at any cost to ensure comfort for passengers during the Eid journey,” he said.

Later in the afternoon, the 12th board meeting of the DSCC governing body was held at Nagar Bhaban.
