IGP announces nationwide block raids

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir has announced that law enforcement agencies will conduct nationwide block raids to capture criminals, terrorists, extortionists, and teenage gang members as part of the government’s top priority to maintain law and order. “Measures will be taken against terrorists, extortionists, criminals and teenage gangs after conducting block raids,” he said.
Speaking at a press briefing at the Police Headquarters Media Centre on Monday, the police chief said the raids would target individuals involved in terrorism, extortion, organized crime, and teenage gang activities. The IGP identified maintaining law and order, combating drugs, terrorism, and extortion as the major challenges for Bangladesh Police.
He said the force is actively working to tackle these challenges and ensure public safety. “The main task of the police is to establish the rule of law and justice. Police services will be reached at every doorstep. Action will be taken against criminals no matter how powerful they are. Tougher action will be taken against teenage gangs,” Fakir said.
Highlighting the importance of stability, he said maintaining peace is essential for the country’s development and that progress is impossible without strong law enforcement.Police units from the central level to district administrations are working to prevent criminal activities, he added, noting that prompt and fair legal action is taken after any sensational crime occurs.
The IGP also stressed that effective measures will be taken against all forms of violence against women, including rape. Fakir further said efforts are underway to improve investigation standards by modernizing the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), the country’s primary investigative agency. He assured that honest, efficient, and talented police officials will be properly evaluated and rewarded. “No irregularity or dishonest act will be tolerated,” he added.
Among those present at the briefing were Additional IGP AKM Awlad Hossain, Additional IGP Md Akram Hossain, Additional IGP Khondoker Rafiqul Islam, Additional IGP Moslehuddin Ahmed, and Additional IGP Sarder Nurul Amin. The IGP has stated that the Bangla-desh Police is a historic service-oriented institution dedicated to the welfare of the country and its people.
He said members of the force have always carried out their responsibilities with the highest sincerity and professionalism during any national need or crisis. “We are firmly committed to performing all responsibilities entrusted to us with sincerity,” he said.
The IGP noted that maintaining law and order is one of the major commitments of the current government. “Ensuring normal law and order across the country will be one of my top priorities,” he added. He also announced a **zero-tolerance policy against extortion**, saying that strict action will be taken against extortionists regardless of political affiliation.
“After assuming office, I adopted a zero-tolerance policy against extortion. Action will be taken against extortionists irrespective of party affiliation. There is no scope for political consideration in this regard,” he said.
He added that clear instructions have already been given to police officers at the field level on the matter. The IGP acknowledged that a trust deficit has developed between the police and the public in recent years and emphasized the need to restore public confidence.
As part of this effort, he said each district’s main police station will be developed into a “zero-complaint police station.”
A circle officer will continuously monitor the overall activities of the station. “We want to provide services in such a way that people can leave the police station with a smile,” he said. He further said that the police response time will be reduced to the minimum level to ensure quicker service to citizens.
Regarding the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr, the IGP said measures have already been taken to ensure the safe travel of people returning home via road, river and rail. Security arrangements have been strengthened to prevent robbery, extortion, snatching and piracy on highways. In addition to the Highway Police, district police have also been instructed to remain vigilant to prevent highway robberies.
Security has also been tightened at major markets across the country to prevent theft and snatching during the Eid shopping period. The police chief noted that dissatisfaction sometimes arises among workers in the garment sector over wages and bonuses ahead of Eid, which can negatively affect law and order.
Authorities have already identified factories where such tensions may occur and are working in coordination with labor leaders, factory owners and the BGMEA to address the issues. He also said that strict surveillance will remain in place to prevent the rise of extremist groups. “We believe the people are the main strength of the state. Therefore, we are always committed to standing beside them and providing the highest level of service,” he said.
The IGP added that steps will be taken to build an efficient, people-friendly, technology-driven and accountable police force, giving priority to constructive opinions and suggestions from citizens. He expressed hope that through mutual harmony, solidarity and cooperation, everyone can work together to move Bangladesh forward on the path of development and prosperity.

The IGP also sought the sincere cooperation of citizens during his tenure as the head of the Bangladesh Police. He added that the police have always received strong support from the media in promoting their positive activities and expressed confidence that this cooperation will continue in the future.
