Charge hearing against Hasina on 6 April in 'Jahajbari' case
Staff Reporter
The International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) has scheduled April 6 to hold a hearing on framing charges against eight people, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, in a crimes against humanity case related to the 2016 Kallyanpur "Jahajbari" incident that left nine people dead.
The date was set on Sunday by a three-member tribunal bench headed by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumdar.
During the hearing, Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim appeared for the prosecution and requested the tribunal to appoint state defence lawyers for six accused who remain absconding. He also sought additional time for the charge-framing proceedings.
The tribunal subsequently fixed April 6 for the hearing.
Earlier, on February 22, the tribunal directed that notices be published in two national newspapers instructing the fugitives to appear before the court, with Sunday set as the deadline for their appearance.
Two of the accused in the case former inspector general of police AKM Shahidul Hoque and former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner Md Asaduzzaman Mia have already been arrested.
The other accused are former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former DMP additional commissioner Sheikh Muhammad Maruf Hasan, former Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime chief Monirul Islam, former DMP joint commissioner (crime) Krishna Pada Roy, and former Detective Branch (DB) joint commissioner Abdul Baten. They remain on the run.
On January 29, the tribunal accepted the formal charges submitted by prosecutors and issued arrest warrants against the eight accused.
The case stems from a Counter Terrorism unit operation carried out by police at a building in Dhaka's Kallyanpur area, known as "Jahajbari," on the night of July 25, 2016. The operation, titled "Operation Storm-26," resulted in the deaths of nine young men who were shot during the raid.
After the political changeover on August 5, 2024, and the reconstitution of the International Crimes Tribunal, the tribunal's investigation agency and prosecution reopened and began investigating the incident.
