DUCSU protest demanding justice over rising violence, rape, murder
City Desk :
Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) held a protest march on Friday demanding exemplary punishment for those involved in recent incidents of rape, murder and violence and calling for stronger measures to ensure the safety of women and children.
The procession began after Jumma prayers at the university’s Central Mosque and marched through several campus roads before concluding with a rally at the foot of Raju Memorial Sculpture at TSC on the university campus.
Speakers at the rally expressed deep concern over the prevailing law and order situation and warned of a nationwide mass movement if authorities fail to show visible progress in prosecuting the accused.
DUCSU Vice-President (VP) Abu Shadik Kayem said the public had expected rule of law and security from the newly elected government following the recent polls.
However, he alleged that a string of rape, murder, extortion and terrorism incidents in recent days had created widespread panic.
He further claimed that in some cases criminals were attempting to evade justice under the protection of influential political figures. Referring to the rape and murder of a teenager in Narsingdi, Kayem alleged that local political leaders were shielding the accused.
“If criminals are hidden instead of being brought to justice, public anger will explode,” he said, demanding swift arrests and exemplary punishment, as well as impartial investigations and transparent legal proceedings.
DUCSU General Secretary SM Farhad said the lack of visible action in recent rape and violence cases had fuelled public frustration. He urged media outlets to publish investigative reports and criticised what he described as selective coverage.
Referring to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Farhad said media attention appeared disproportionate, adding that the public did not want to see crimes go unreported or unaddressed.
He warned that attempts to spread misleading propaganda to cover up crimes would only deepen the crisis.
DUCSU Assistant General Secretary Mohiuddin Khan said ensuring women’s safety is a fundamental responsibility of the state and called for prompt investigations and speedy trials in all cases.
Transport Secretary Asif Abdullah, Health and Environment Secretary Abdullah Al Minhaj, Common Room, Reading Room and Cafeteria Secretary Umme Salma and Executive Member Raihan Uddin also addressed the rally.
The speakers said a series of rape and violence incidents across the country had placed women and children under severe threat.
They called on the Ministry of Home Affairs and other relevant authorities to take swift and effective action, and urged political parties to clarify their stance regarding allegations against their leaders and activists.
