Illegal sand mining in Kamolganj

A fine of Tk 1 lakh has been imposed for illegal sand mining from an unleased area of the Dhala River in Dhormopur-Jasmatpur, Rahimpur Union, Kamolganj Upazila, Moulvibazar. On Sunday afternoon, a mobile court, led by the Kamolganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer, fined Abdul Kadir for the offence.

Confirming the operation, UNO Md. Asaduzzaman said the fine was collected for illegal sand extraction from the unleased portion of the Dhala River in Dhormopur. He added that operations against illegal sand mining will continue.

It is reported that a powerful syndicate has been illegally extracting sand using dredger machines from the Dhormopur-Jasmatpur area for a long time, profiting from the sale while causing the government to lose crores in revenue.

Locals had submitted a written complaint to the Deputy Commissioner on January 28 demanding a halt to illegal sand mining. However, the following morning, Monday, sand extraction continued using 8-10 dredger machines.
