‘No post-election violence on minorities for the first time’

Staff Reporter:

Shafiqul Alam, Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, has claimed that for the first time in the country’s history, no incidents of post-election violence or attacks on minority communities have occurred following a national election.
He made the remarks on Sunday (15 February) while briefing reporters at the Foreign Service Academy after a meeting of the Advisory Council.

Speaking at the briefing, Alam said the country had witnessed a unique election through which political parties affected by enforced disappearances and killings, as well as leaders of the July uprising, would now represent the opposition in parliament. “For the first time, an election has taken place after which no attacks on minorities have been reported. I hope our journalist friends will keep an eye on this matter,” he said.

The press secretary also noted that the Chief Adviser thanked the Advisory Council for delivering a peaceful election. The council expressed satisfaction with the performance of the Election Commission and conveyed its appreciation.

According to Alam, the Advisory Council believes that through this election, the police force has regained its dignity and public trust.

Addressing a recent rape allegation in Hatia, he said the government would form a committee to ensure a fair and proper investigation into the incident.

At the briefing, the press secretary further revealed that foreign ministers from all SAARC member states, along with the Foreign Minister of Qatar, have been invited to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the new government.
