UN calls for safe, inclusive participation of women in elections

Staff Reporter :

The United Nations has called for safe, inclusive, and meaningful participation of women in public life, emphasizing it as a fundamental right ahead of the 13th National Parliamentary Election and the referendum to be held on Thursday.

In a statement issued Wednesday, the UN highlighted that women and girls – particularly those with disabilities, from minority communities, or gender-diverse backgrounds – often face heightened barriers, discrimination, and gender-based violence.

“Women in public life, including political leaders, activists, journalists, and human rights defenders, are reporting increasing incidents of cyberbullying, deepfakes, coordinated harassment, and image-based abuse, including AI-altered and sexualized content,” the statement said.

The UN noted concerns raised by women’s groups and civil society organizations regarding violence and
harassment of women candidates and voters, including online abuse, ahead of the polls.

“Safe and meaningful participation is not optional – it is a right. All voters, including women, must be able to participate as candidates and voters without intimidation, discrimination, online abuse, or fear of reprisals,” said a UN spokesperson.

The UN also urged political leaders, parties, and supporters to adopt a zero-tolerance approach to any form of violence or harassment against women during the electoral process.

“We are confident that authorities will continue to take steps to uphold security and the rule of law, ensuring the safety and rights of every individual. The United Nations remains committed to supporting these efforts,” the spokesperson added.

The call comes as Bangladesh approaches a critical moment in its democratic process, with women’s full participation seen as essential for an inclusive and representative election.
