Tarique appeals vote for BNP to build self-reliant Bangladesh

Staff Reporter :

Acknowledging past shortcomings of his party while in power, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman on Monday urged voters to support the ‘Sheaf of Paddy’ in the February 12 election to help establish a safe, independent, and self-reliant Bangladesh by implementing BNP’s plans and programmes.

In a televised address broadcast on Bangladesh Television ahead of the polls, Tarique said BNP had governed the country several times with public support, but admitted that during those periods there were unintentional errors and limitations in certain areas. He expressed sincere regret to the people for those mistakes.

Stressing that the party has learned from its past experiences and built upon its achievements, Tarique once again sought public backing in the upcoming national election to ensure a secure future for both present and coming generations.

“For the welfare of the country, its people, and your families, I have prepared a range of plans.

To implement them effectively, I seek your support and your vote for the sheaf of paddy,” he said.

Referring to the contributions of BNP founder President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia in strengthening democracy and national development, Tarique appealed to voters, saying that those who cherish Shaheed Zia, respect Khaleda Zia, and value independence and democracy should cast their ballots for the BNP symbol on February 12.

He said a victory for the sheaf of paddy would signify a victory for Bangladesh itself and would safeguard the country’s freedom, sovereignty, and independence.

He added that he, along with BNP leaders and activists, has long been preparing to carry forward the political, social, and economic vision established by Shaheed Zia and Begum Khaleda Zia.

Tarique emphasized that effective implementation of BNP’s agenda requires strict anti-corruption measures, restoration of the rule of law, and ensuring that the state and government remain accountable to the people.

“If you entrust us with governing the country, the future government will be answerable to the people.

A BNP government, Insha’Allah, will take the toughest possible stance against corruption and will restore the rule of law,” he pledged, adding that the people are the true source of BNP’s political strength.

The pre-recorded address was aired at 7:15pm on Monday. In his 37-minute speech, Tarique also outlined various policies and initiatives included in the party’s election manifesto.

Recalling what he described as a fascist period and the controversial January 7, 2024 election, he said he had previously urged citizens to spend that day with their families.

Calling the upcoming election one to be held in a “fascism-free Bangladesh,” Tarique encouraged voters to cast their ballots for the sheaf of paddy throughout February 12 and urged young voters to dedicate their first vote to BNP’s electoral symbol.

He also called upon democracy-minded citizens to take responsibility for BNP candidates on election day, stating that elected BNP MPs would begin serving the people from the very next day, while he himself would oversee their accountability.

Tarique reiterated that if BNP receives the mandate to govern, justice—guided by the ideals of the Prophet—would be the party’s core principle.

“February 12 is a decisive day for establishing the rights of the people of Bangladesh. I pray to Allah for the victory of the sheaf of paddy. Vote for the sheaf of paddy throughout the day on February 12,” he said.

He further outlined a vision of a secure Bangladesh for all citizens, regardless of religion or region, emphasizing freedom of belief and protection of minority communities.

Tarique also reaffirmed BNP’s commitment to supporting religious leaders of all faiths, including financial assistance for imams, khatibs, and moazzins.
