Jahanara opens up about sexual harassment investigation report
Sports Reporter :
Former Bangladesh Women’s Cricket team captain Jahanara Alam has expressed her dissatisfaction with the report of the committee formed to investigate allegations of sexual harassment and misconduct. Her legal consultancy firm ‘Mahbub & Company’ made this known on behalf of Jahanara in a statement on Sunday.
Jahanara Alam’s lawyers have claimed that although she has the full right to know the results of the investigation as a complainant, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has not officially informed her. She has not even been provided with a copy of the report. The statement said that such secrecy is disappointing in cases of serious allegations such as sexual harassment, misconduct, retaliatory behavior and breach of confidentiality. Jahanara Alam feels relieved that the investigation has been completed, but she is disappointed by the lack of transparency.
This statement was issued in the wake of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) statement on February 4. Jahanara’s lawyers claim that when the BCB was asked for clarification on the investigation report via email, the BCB said the report is currently under review by the legal team. However, no definitive answer was received on whether Jahanara will be given the report at all.
According to the BCB statement, two of the four specific allegations made by Jahanara Alam were found to be true by the investigation committee. Initial evidence of the allegations against former Bangladesh Women’s Cricket team Selector and Manager Manjurul Islam was found. However, the BCB did not specifically mention which allegations were proven and what information was used to prove the allegations.
Jahanara Alam called this ambiguity disappointing considering the serious nature of the allegations. The BCB claimed that the investigation committee was formed on its own initiative and not based on Jahanara’s allegations. Protesting this, the notice said Jahanara Alam is clarifying that the committee was originally formed to investigate the formal allegations of sexual harassment made by her.
