2 BRUR teachers suspended

The university administration has temporarily suspended two teachers of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) following allegations of sexual harassment.
The decision was made at the university’s 119th Syndicate meeting held on Saturday. The matter was confirmed by Dr Ilyas Pramanik, Student Adviser and Syndicate Member of the university.
The teachers who have been temporarily suspended are Assistant Professor and former Assistant Proctor Md Shamim Hossain of the Department of Geography and Environmental Science, and Associate Professor Dr Shakibul Islam of the Department of Disaster Management. According to the decision, Associate Professor Dr Shakibul Islam of the Department of Disaster Management will no longer be allowed to serve as a supervisor for female students in the future.
Dr Ilyas Pramanik stated that the two teachers have been temporarily suspended over allegations of sexual harassment. He also said that a decision has been taken to prevent Dr Shakibul Islam from supervising female students.
Regarding the matter, University Registrar Dr Md Harun Or Rashid said that the investigation committee has recommended punitive action against them. The final punishment will be determined by the Administrative Tribunal. They will remain temporarily suspended until the tribunal delivers its decision.
It is noteworthy that a female student from the Department of Geography and Environmental Science submitted a 31-page written complaint detailing allegations of sexual harassment against Md Shamim Hossain.
In addition, a student from the Department of Disaster Management filed a sexual harassment complaint against Associate Professor Dr Shakibul Islam.
