‘New govt may assume office by Feb 15 or 16’

Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said the interim government would hand over power to the elected government as soon as possible after the election results are announced.

He said the entire process could take up to three days, and a new government may assume office by February 15 or 16.

Speaking at a press conference at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital on Thursday afternoon, following a meeting of the Advisory Council chaired by Chief Adviser Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus, Alam said preparations are in place for a swift transfer of power.

He said newly elected MPs would take their oath immediately after the election, followed by the rapid completion of the power transition process.

“Considering the fastest possible timeline, this could be completed within three days – meaning the new government could take office on February 15 or 16. I don’t think it will go beyond the 17th or 18th of February,” he added.

At the same press conference, Deputy Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser Abul Kalam Azad dismissed circulating rumors that the interim government would remain in power for 180 working days, calling them baseless and misleading.

He said the interim government has consistently maintained that it would step aside after handing over state responsibilities to the party that secures a majority in the election.
