17 BGB platoons deployed in N’ganj ahead of polls

Staff Correspondent :
Ahead of the 13th National Parliamentary Election, 17 platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have been deployed in Narayanganj to maintain law and order. The armed force, primarily tasked with border security, has set up camps in all five upazilas of the district.
The information was shared on Friday (30 January) at a press conference held at the permanent BGB camp in Jalkuri by Lieutenant Colonel Mirza Mohammad Arafat, Commanding Officer of the 62 BGB Narayanganj Battalion.
Lieutenant Colonel Arafat said that, based on risk assessments of polling centers, BGB personnel will operate as both mobile and static forces. Depending on the upazila, between two and five platoons will be deployed.
He also stated that election areas will be monitored using drones, and a Quick Response Force will remain on standby to handle any emergency situations.
Emphasizing neutrality, he said the BGB will remain completely non-partisan and play a supportive role in ensuring equal opportunities for all political parties and candidates. In coordination with other law enforcement agencies, the BGB will work to ensure that voters can exercise their voting rights in a safe, peaceful, and fear-free environment.
He added that security measures along the border have been strengthened in connection with the election. The BGB will remain on maximum alert to prevent border-related crimes such as smuggling, illegal infiltration, drug trafficking, and arms smuggling—from influencing the electoral process.
Lieutenant Colonel Arafat further noted that the BGB will be assigned election duties in 489 upazilas nationwide, with the force solely responsible in 61 border upazilas. Within the Narayanganj Battalion’s jurisdiction, 11 base camps have been established, and approximately 36 platoons have been deployed to ensure a free and peaceful election at 1,921 polling centers across 13 parliamentary constituencies. In Narayanganj district alone, 17 platoons from five base camps are operating across the five upazilas. Special operations to recover illegal weapons are also ongoing.
