BWTCC launches ‘Jahaji’ software, digitising lighter vessel management

Business Report :
Bangladesh Water Transport Coordination Cell (BWTCC) has launched a digital platform, “Lighter Vessel Management Software – Jahaji”, to bring transparency and efficiency to lighter vessel operations in Chattogram.
The software was formally inaugurated on Friday at the Bangladesh Water Transport Coordination Cell (BWTCC) office Chattogram.
Chief Engineer and Ship Surveyor of the Department of Shipping Mirza Saifur Rahman inaugurated the system as the chief guest.
Under the new system, serial allocation and vessel assignment will be automated using geo-fencing technology, ensuring a first-come, first-served process. The platform also offers real-time berthing lists, SOS services, digital staff profiles, weather alerts, simplified demurrage settlement, and digital piloting coupons.
BWTCC officials said the software would enable real-time monitoring of lighter vessels, helping prevent delays and misuse and improving overall operational efficiency.
Commodore Shafiul Bari said allegations over serial manipulation were a direct result of the outdated manual system, told the media.
“Irregularities surrounding lighter vessel serials have persisted for a long time because the process was never digitised. This software will ensure transparency, efficiency, and restore confidence among all stakeholders,” he said.
Meanwhile, about 21 lakh tons of consumer goods are currently waiting to be unloaded from 46 ships anchored at the outer area of Chattogram Port, as limited warehouse space and high demand for lighter ships slow down operations.
Businessmen have noted a slowdown in unloading imported consumer goods ahead of the Ramadan season. At present, the 46 ships at the outer anchorage carry a total of 23.46 lakh tons of goods. As of Thursday morning, 11 lakh tons have been unloaded, leaving roughly 12 lakh tons still waiting.
BWTCC believes the digital initiative will strengthen governance in inland water transport and contribute to achieving the country’s broader blue economy goals.
