BGECC demands Pay Commission gazette before polls
City Desk :
The government employees through The Bangladesh Government Employees Coordination Council (BGECC) on Thursday demanded a gazette notification for the Pay Commission before the next national election.
At a press conference at its central office, Nomanuzzaman Al Azad, Chairman of the organisation’s Policy-Making Council, said that with 22 lakh government employees awaiting the 9th Pay Scale, recent remarks by the government’s energy adviser have deeply hurt, angered, and disappointed public servants. “Under these circumstances, there is no alternative but to announce tougher protest programmes to realise our demands,” he said.
Secretary General Badrul Alam Sobuj formally presented the organisation’s sole demand: that the Pay Commission report be issued through a gazette notification effective from January 1, 2026, and fully implemented before the next national election.
The council plans to submit a memorandum to the Cabinet Secretary on Sunday, February 1, 2026, as an ultimatum. The Secretary General warned that if the Pay Commission report is not implemented on time, the organisation will launch strict protest measures, including nationwide rallies, marches towards the Secretariat, and a general work stoppage.
The press conference was attended by senior leaders from various government employee organisations, including Additional Secretary General Md Roknuzzaman, Kamal Hossain Sikder, Executive President Md Selim Bhuiyan, and representatives from DPDC, Bangladesh Railway, Dhaka Medical College Hospital, government women employees’ organisations, life insurance employees’ unions, inter-university employee federations, pensioners’ associations, and other government departments and institutions.
