DU students demand affordable food

DU Correspondent :

The Students’ Council for Ideal Campus (SCIC) has submitted a memorandum containing four demands to the university administration, alleging that the TSC Cafeteria has failed to ensure quality, variety, and affordable food in line with students’ needs.

According to the organization, although quality and necessary food services have recently been introduced at the DUCSU Cafeteria following earlier student demands, a positive and commendable step; the same standards and facilities have not yet been implemented at the TSC Cafeteria.

As the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) is one of the central hubs of the University of Dhaka, a large number of students depend on its cafeteria every day. However, SCIC claims that under the current system, students are being deprived of expected facilities in terms of food quality, variety, and availability.

On Wednesday, leaders and activists of SCIC submitted a memorandum outlining four specific demands to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) of the University of Dhaka.

The demands include ensuring food items of the same quality and standard as the DUCSU Cafeteria at the TSC Cafeteria, providing subsidies from the university administration to keep food prices within students’ purchasing capacity, ensuring that a sufficient number of students can regularly access food without disruption, and increasing the number of food items to better reflect students’ preferences and needs.

The organization expressed hope that the university administration would consider the issue seriously and take prompt action in the interest of students’ overall welfare.
