Stronger Bilateral Engagement: Tarique meets UK, Nepal and Bhutan envoys

Diplomats from the United Kingdom, Nepal and Bhutan have held separate meetings with Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairman Tarique Rahman in Dhaka on Saturday, underscoring growing diplomatic engagement and a shared emphasis on democratic processes and stronger bilateral and regional cooperation.

British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Sarah Cooke met BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman on Saturday, reiterating the United Kingdom’s long-standing support for free, fair, credible and peaceful elections in Bangladesh.

During the meeting, Sarah Cooke, in a Facebook post, reiterated the United Kingdom’s long-standing support for free, fair, credible and peaceful elections in Bangladesh. She also conveyed condolences on the death of former prime minister and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia.

Earlier, envoys from Nepal and Bhutan held separate meetings with Tarique Rahman, reaffirming their countries’ interest in strengthening ties with Bangladesh.

During the meeting with Nepal’s Ambassador to Bangladesh, Ghanashyam Bhandari both side reviewed the current state of Bangladesh-Nepal relations and explored ways to expand cooperation in areas of shared interest, including trade, investment, energy, tourism, education and people-to-people exchanges.

Later, Bhutan’s Ambassador to Bangladesh, Dasho Karma Hamu Dorjee, met Tarique Rahman at the BNP Chairman’s office in Gulshan at around 4:55 pm, according to BNP media cell member Shayrul Kabir Khan.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Humayun Kabir, joint secretary general for international affairs and a member of the BNP chairman’s foreign affairs advisory council, were present at the meeting.

The series of meetings underscored the importance of regional engagement and reflected the BNP’s stated emphasis on strengthening bilateral and sub-regional cooperation with neighbouring countries in South Asia.
