A daring robbery took place at the residence of a fish trader in Araihazar upazila of Narayanganj, where armed robbers held family members hostage and looted cash and gold ornaments.
The robbers reportedly seized approximately Tk seven lakh kept under a bed and in wardrobes, along with about four bhori of gold ornaments stored in a wall cabinet. During the incident, the homeowner’s son was injured.
The robbery occurred at around 1:15 am on Saturday at the home of Haji Siraj Mia in the Latabdi Singarpur area of Fatepur Union. Haji Siraj Mia (45), son of Fazlul Haque, is a fish trader by profession.
The entire incident was captured on the house’s CCTV cameras. The footage shows the gang breaking open the main door on the second floor and entering the house. They then held family members in four separate rooms at gunpoint and with sharp weapons. A three-minute CCTV clip of the robbery went viral on Facebook, spreading panic across the upazila. After receiving the report, Araihazar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Alauddin visited the scene.
Victim Sirajul Islam said that at around 1:30 a.m., an armed group of robbers broke into the house by forcing open the main gate on the second floor and took positions in different rooms, creating fear among family members.
He further alleged that the robbers attempted to press a foot against the neck of his four-year-old grandson, forcing the family into submission. The gang then looted around seven lakh in cash and approximately four bhori of gold ornaments.
As locals became alert, the robbers fled, leaving behind a large knife. Earlier, residents reportedly thwarted an attempted robbery by the same gang in the nearby Atadi area.
