Jamaat leader, wife killed in Dhaka

Staff Reporter :

A leader of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami was brutally murdered inside his residence in Dhaka’s Rajabazar area early Monday morning.

The incident occurred around 2:30am at a residential building in Paschim Rajabazar. The victim, Anwarullah, was at home with his wife on the second floor when the attack took place.

According to CCTV footage, two intruders cut through the window grills to enter the apartment and stayed inside for nearly two hours before exiting the same way. Family members reported that the assailants tied up both Anwarullah and his wife before killing him.

After the murder, the attackers allegedly escaped with around eight bhori of gold and Tk 500,000 in cash. However, the family maintains that the crime was carefully planned and intended as a killing rather than a simple robbery.

The incident has created panic among local residents. Neighbours said the killing has raised serious concerns about security in the area. One resident noted that people rushed outside upon hearing the news, only to find the police had already sealed off the location.

Anwarullah’s nephew alleged that the attackers ensured his death before leaving.
“They forced my uncle to recite the Kalima Shahadat moments before killing him and made sure he was dead before fleeing,” he claimed.

Locally, Anwarullah was known as a homeopathic practitioner and an active figure in Jamaat politics. His colleagues and neighbours have called for a thorough, fair, and impartial investigation.

Police said it was too early to confirm whether the incident was a robbery or a targeted assassination.

Talebur Rahman, an official of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch, said no case had been filed as of Monday, though preparations were underway. He added that CCTV footage from surrounding areas is being collected and efforts are ongoing to identify those responsible.
