Fish Festival held in Moulvibazar

Like every year, a 3-day traditional fish fair begun on the banks of the Kushiyara River in Sherpur area of Moulvibazar district on the occasion of Paush Sankranti on Monday.
People eagerly await the fish fair every year.
The fair, which has been going on for more than two hundred years, attracts buyers from far and wide to buy fresh fish of indigenous species that grow naturally in the haors and rivers. People of several districts eagerly await the fish fairs to be held every year.
That is why buyers and sellers prepare in advance. Sherpur district borders Moulvibazar, Sylhet and Habiganj. A fish fair is held in the area every year. The fish fair, which started on the occasion of Paush Sankranti, has now turned into a public festival. The 3-day fair, which began on Monday, January 12, will end on Wednesday afternoon. Fish Vendors said that fish that grow naturally in haors and rivers are usually brought to this fair. Fish traders collect fish from haors and rivers from different parts of the country on the occasion of the fair.
Fish trader Rafiq Ahmed said that a 70-kg baghair fish was caught from the Kushiyara River at the fair. Along with that fish, various other species of local fish were brought to the fair. The biggest baghair fish is being sold for Rs 90.
Thousand taka Sohel Ahmed was selling 42 kg Katla fish for 85 thousand taka and 25 kg Boal fish for 60 thousand taka. Even though buyers were asking for 50 and 35 thousand taka, he did not sell and offered a higher price.
Muktadir Hossain of Kadipur area of Kulaura city said that he had come to buy fish at the fair with three friends on the occasion of the fair. Despite the bitter cold in the extreme winter, there were buyers, sellers and curious people throughout the fair.
Crowds of people Buyers who came to the fair said that they came to the fair to buy fresh fish of the indigenous species Rui, Katla, Boal, Gajar, Baghair and Air, which grow naturally in the haors and rivers. And they prepared for buying these fish quite well.
From a few days ago the fair attracted fish traders from various parts of the country, including the neighboring Kushiyara River, Hakaluki Haor, Kawadighi Haor, Hail Haor and Tanguguar Haor in Sunamganj.
They bring huge fish of different species. Fish fair organizer Md. Abdul Hamid said that fish worth about 14 to 15 crore taka can be sold at this traditional fish fair of rural Bengal. Various fish species of the country are being sold at the fair.

Moulvibazar Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md. Rajib Hossain said that the government received revenue of 1, 81,250 taka including VAT from the fair this year through open auction.
