Tarique to begin electioneering from Sylhet Jan 22
Staff reporter :
BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman is set to launch his election campaign on 22 January, starting from Sylhet.
Announcing the programme on Monday, BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed said Tarique Rahman will begin the campaign by visiting the shrines of Hazrat Shah Jalal (RA) in Sylhet city and Hazrat Shah Paran (RA) in Khadimnagar.
“From the holy land of saints and spiritual leaders, the chairman’s formal election campaign will commence through these shrine visits,” he told reporters.
Sylhet has long held symbolic importance for the BNP. Party founder Ziaur Rahman began his presidential election campaign from the district, while former prime minister Khaleda Zia also launched her election campaigns from Sylhet since 1991. Continuing that tradition, Tarique Rahman will start his campaign there.
The Sylhet district and metropolitan BNP units have taken extensive preparations ahead of the visit. District BNP President Qayyum Chowdhury said that following the shrine visits, Tarique Rahman will address his first election rally at the Alia Madrasah ground.
“We are making all-out preparations to organise the rally. After nearly two decades, Tarique Rahman is coming to Sylhet.
This will be his first visit as party chairman, and the people of Sylhet are eagerly waiting to welcome him,” Qayyum said.
After the Sylhet rally, Tarique Rahman will begin campaigning along the Sylhet–Dhaka highway, addressing one rally in each electoral area along the route.
According to party leaders, he will hold roadside rallies in Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Brahmanbaria, Kishoreganj, Narsingdi and Narayanganj districts.
This will be the first time Tarique Rahman addresses a public rally as BNP chairman, where he is expected to present the party’s election pledges.
The central leadership has yet to officially announce the full schedule of the Sylhet visit. The election steering committee said details will be shared with the media once the programme is finalised.
