Bangladesh’s roads have exacted a grim toll in 2025, claiming 7,359 lives and leaving 16,476 injured, according to the Road Safety Foundation.
The figures, drawn primarily from media reports, reveal a persistent and deadly pattern that continues to haunt highways and city streets alike.
Motorcycles were implicated in 3,029 accidents, resulting in 2,671 deaths — 36 percent of all road fatalities recorded.
Alarmingly, the overall toll includes more than 1,000 children and 962 women, underscoring the disproportionate impact on vulnerable groups.
Presenting the foundation’s annual report at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity on Saturday, officials highlighted the urgent need for effective road safety measures to address this ongoing crisis, reports bdnews24.com
Road accidents in the past year killed 1,008 children and 962 women. The victims also included 1,564 pedestrians. Drivers and their assistants accounted for nearly 13 percent of the total death toll.
Additionally, 149 people were killed in 132 accidents on waterways, with 34 others reported missing. Railway accidents, on the other hand, claimed 478 lives.
The research organisation’s report also revealed that cargo vehicles were involved in 27.55 percent of all road accidents, followed by motorcycles at 25.47 percent, three-wheeler vehicles at 17.18 percent, and passenger buses at 13.87 percent.
Vehicles such as microbuses, private cars, and ambulances; locally modified vehicles like Nosimons and Bhotbhotis; and rickshaws accounted for less than 10 percent of road accidents. Bicycles had the lowest share at 0.88 percent.
