DC inspects Ballamukha embankment

Feni Correspondent :

Feni Deputy Commissioner Monira Haque inspected the Ballamukha embankment on the border of Parashuram. Over the past few days, videos of the Ballamukha embankment being cut and looted have been circulating on social media. After that, the Deputy Commissioner went to inspect the site of the sand extraction from the embankment.

?In the terrible flood of August 2024, the Ballamukha embankment adjacent to the Muhri River at the zero point of the border broke, submerging vast areas of Parashuram and Fulgazi upazilas. There was extensive damage to people’s crops and property. Two people died in Parashuram upazila due to the strong current of water.

After the flood, the Water Development Board allocated about 15 crore taka to repair the damaged part of the Ballamukha embankment. Even though more than a year has passed, the embankment work is still not completed. Along with this, there are complaints that the contractor’s employees are cutting and selling soil and sand from the cropland around the embankment.

?On Thursday, while inspecting the Ballamukha embankment, Deputy Commissioner Monira Haque raised questions about the issue of soil and sand being extracted from the side of the embankment. She said that an explanation should be sought from the officials of the Feni Water Development Board on why sand was extracted from inside the embankment.

?The locals complained to the Deputy Commissioner that old blocks are being used in the embankment. These blocks, which are 25/30 years old, have expired. The embankment cannot be sustained with these blocks. At that time, the Deputy Commissioner said that old blocks cannot be used in the embankment. She said that a written inquiry will be sought from the Water Development Board on these issues.
