The Election Commission (EC) on Saturday cleared the nomination papers of several senior political leaders while rejecting or cancelling others, following scrutiny ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections.
BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman had his nominations declared valid in Bogra-6 (Sadar) and Dhaka-17 constituencies.
Bogra District Returning Officer Md. Taufiqur Rahman confirmed the validity of Tarique Rahman’s papers, while in Dhaka-17, Divisional Commissioner and Returning Officer Sharaf Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury said that out of 17 nominations submitted, 10 were accepted—including Tarique Rahman and Jamaat-e-Islami candidate SM Khaliduzzaman—while seven were rejected for various reasons.
BNP Chairperson’s advisory council member and freedom fighter Abdus Salam represented Tarique Rahman during the scrutiny process.
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman also received clearance for his nomination in Dhaka-15, while BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was confirmed as a valid candidate in Thakurgaon-1.
District Returning Officer Irshat Farzana added that nominations of Delwar Hossain (Jamaat-e-Islami) and Khademul Islam (Islami Andolan Bangladesh) were also accepted.
Out of 21 nomination papers across Thakurgaon’s three constituencies, one was cancelled and three remain suspended, with scrutiny ongoing in Thakurgaon-2 and Thakurgaon-3.
In Dhaka-11, the nominations of Nahid Islam, convener of the National Citizens Party (NCP) and candidate of the 12-party alliance, along with BNP nominee Dr. MA Qayyum, were approved. The constituency includes Rampura, Badda, and Bhatara areas.
The Election Commission has scheduled the scrutiny of nomination papers to continue until tomorrow, ensuring all corrections and appeals are considered before the final list of candidates is published.
