Family overwhelmed by nationwide condolences for Khaleda Zia: Tarique
Staff Reporter :
BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman on Saturday said his family has been profoundly touched by the overwhelming expressions of sympathy and prayers pouring in from home and abroad following the passing of his mother and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia.
In a message posted on his verified Facebook page, Tarique wrote that as the three-day state mourning period drew to an end, the family continued to feel moved by the depth of love and respect shown by people across Bangladesh and from well-wishers overseas.
He said the days of mourning revealed how Khaleda Zia had come to represent different ideals to different people—many of which the family themselves had not fully realised during her lifetime.
According to Tarique, to countless individuals she embodied resilience, moral courage and the determination to stand firm in one’s beliefs despite adversity—values that transcend political boundaries and resonate universally.
He expressed sincere appreciation to the interim government, particularly Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus and his Cabinet, for their decisive leadership and efficient coordination in arranging a dignified farewell for the former prime minister within a short time.
Tarique also conveyed gratitude to the international community, neighbouring countries, diplomats and global partners, saying their gestures of compassion deeply moved the family. He mentioned the presence of foreign dignitaries at the funeral, condolence messages, written tributes, social media expressions and official statements issued by world leaders, diplomatic missions and organisations as deeply heartening.
The BNP leader further thanked members of the armed forces, law-enforcement agencies, and officials from various ministries and administrations for their professionalism and dedication during the mourning period.
“My family and I were deeply touched by the care, discipline and sense of responsibility shown during my mother’s final farewell,” he said.
He offered special acknowledgment to the President Guard Regiment for rendering a solemn guard of honour and final salute, stating that their respectful escort reflected the nation’s reverence and ensured that her final journey was conducted with the honour befitting her life and service.
Tarique noted that many others, whose efforts may not have been publicly visible, also played vital roles in ensuring the ceremonies were carried out smoothly.
“To all who worked quietly behind the scenes, please accept my heartfelt gratitude. By the grace of Allah, your efforts allowed our family and the nation to honour her memory with dignity,” he added.
Finally, Tarique said the presence of people from every corner of the country paying their respects was something the family had never imagined.
He described it as a rare and powerful moment of national unity, reflecting the compassion and shared humanity of the Bangladeshi people.
“On behalf of our family and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, I thank everyone who stood beside us in grief and remembrance. Your solidarity has been a great source of comfort and strength, and we remain forever grateful,” he said.
