Prevention of Crimes: Security tightened on Sirajganj highways

Amid the growing concern across the country ahead of 13th national parliament elections, highway police in Bogura circle including Hatikumrul Highway thana in Sirajganj have beefed up surveillance to prevent crimes including robbery, dacoity, snatching, kidnapping and all kinds of smugglings.

With the aim, police have increased patrolling on highway compared to the previous times.

Besides, they have launched special drives against illegal vehicles including unlicensed motorcycles and CNGs to prevent carrying of illegal things like arms and drugs.

Seeking anonymity, a driver of a private car said, Sirajganj is the gateway of northern region.

This is considered as safe transit route for criminals. Various vehicles are used her to carry drugs and arms. This trend may increase further ahead of polls, if the necessary surveillance is not geared up right now.

Md. Shahid Ullah, Superintendent of Highway Police in Bogura Circle said, “Keeping the matter of upcoming national polls in head, we have increased our surveillance on the highway to resist all kinds of criminal activities including robbery, snatching, kidnapping and smuggling.

Besides, special attention has given to unauthorized vehicles including unlicensed motorcycles so that criminals cannot raise their heads. If anyone tries to spoil the peace on highway, he or she must be brought to the book.”

He also said, Bonpara highway thana police in a raid on the Bonpara-Hatikumrul highway at Manikpur area in Boraigram upazila of Natore district on Thursday recovered 30,000 pieces of banned Yaba pills after conducting a search to a truck.

During the drive, police also seized the truck and arrested its driver Shamim Hossain, 30, son of Khorshed Alam of Khaloibhora village in Sathiya upazila of Pabna district in connection with the incident. Such drives will be continued, he added.

Ismail Hossain, Officer in Charge of Hatikumurl Highway thana said, “The number of prosecutions against unauthorized vehicles has comparatively increased in the last four months after my joining at the thana.

We hope to increase our drives in the future to keep the highway safe and comfortable for the travelers ahead of 13th national parliament elections.”

The OC also said, “At least 1299 cases have been filed against unauthorized vehicles including bikes and CNG driven auto-rickshaws until December 25 since my joining.

Legal action would be taken against all unauthorized vehicles to avert frequent accidents and crimes on the highways under my jurisdiction.”
