BNP to remove banners, posters within 3 days

Staff Reporter :

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has decided to remove all banners and posters from across the country, including the capital Dhaka, within the next three days.

The decision has been taken under the directive of BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman on Friday at the BNP central office in Nayapaltan in the capital.

However, banners and posters expressing condolence over the death of the party chairperson, the late Khaleda Zia, will remain in place for a few more days. All other banners and posters are being removed by BNP leaders and activists, including those from its affiliated organisations.

The meeting was attended by top leaders of Dhaka Metropolitan North and South BNP, as well as leaders of Jubo Dal, Swechchhasebak Dal and Chhatra Dal.

BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi was present and issued the directives during the meeting.
Later, Rizvi formally inaugurated the banner and poster removal campaign in front of the party’s central office in Nayapaltan.

Among those present were Dhaka Metropolitan North BNP convener Aminul Haque, member secretary Mostafa Zaman, Dhaka Metropolitan South member secretary Tanvir Ahmed Robin, Jubo Dal president Monayem Munna, organising secretary Kamruzzaman Jewel, Swechchhasebak Dal president SM Jilani, vice-president Dr Jahedul Kabir Zahid, Chhatra Dal leaders Raju Ahmed and Dr Touhidur Rahman Awal, among others.

In a brief address, Rizvi said that while banners and posters are a means of political expression, their indiscriminate use is damaging the city’s beauty and disrupting public order.

“Our acting chairman has instructed us to ensure that no one’s rights are hampered due to the placement of banners and posters,” he said.

He added that BNP’s metropolitan units and affiliated organisations have begun removing banners and posters on a voluntary basis.

“The condolence banners over Madam’s death may remain for a few more days,” Rizvi noted.
Rizvi also said the party has already held meetings to divide responsibilities and stressed that banners and posters should be removed automatically once any programme ends.

“We have started this initiative in Dhaka today, and it will continue across the country,” he said.
