Biman posts record revenue and extends profit streak to fifth straight year

Business Report :

Biman Bangladesh Airlines has reported its highest-ever revenue and continued profitability for the fifth consecutive fiscal year, supported by rising passenger traffic, strong cargo growth and tighter cost management.
According to financial results disclosed at the airline’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), the national carrier earned an operating profit of Tk 16.02 billion (Tk 1,602 crore) in the fiscal year 2024-25. Total revenue rose 9.46 percent year-on-year to Tk 115.59 billion (Tk 11,559 crore), marking the biggest annual earnings in Biman’s 54-year history.

The performance also means Biman has posted net profits in nine out of the last ten fiscal years, said a media release signed by Boshra Islam, general manager (public relations) of the airline.

The AGM was chaired by Biman’s Board of Directors Chairman Sk Bashir Uddin and attended by board members, shareholders and high-ranking representatives from the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cabinet Division and Ministry of Commerce.

Passenger growth and route expansion boost performance
Biman operated a fleet of 21 aircraft during FY2024-25, serving 30 domestic and international destinations. Passenger numbers increased to 33.83 lakh, up 1 percent from the previous year, reflecting recovery in international travel demand and rising public confidence in the flag carrier.

January 2025 was particularly strong, with the airline recording its highest-ever monthly ticket sales a milestone attributed to improved service quality and modernised airport operations.

Faster baggage handling, enhanced in-flight amenities and customer-oriented digital services have all contributed to higher passenger satisfaction, according to officials.
Cargo revenue jumps 45pc

Cargo operations played a key role in the airline’s strong financial outcome. Biman transported 43,918 metric tonnes of goods during the fiscal year, generating Tk 9.25 billion (Tk 925 crore) a remarkable 45.21 percent increase from the previous year.

The airline also provided ground handling services to 31,112 foreign airline flights, serving more than 6.1 million passengers passing through Bangladesh airports.
Officials reiterated that Biman is a fully self-financed state-owned enterprise and has never received government subsidy a point highlighted as a major achievement amid global aviation challenges.

They also said Biman continues to adhere strictly to international aviation safety standards and has maintained a strong operational safety record.

Aviation analysts have credited Biman’s improving fortunes to recent fleet upgrades, increased focus on profitable long-haul routes and a more efficient business model.
The airline plans to further strengthen its international network, enhance fuel-efficiency and expand cargo capacity positioning itself for sustained growth as air travel rebounds globally.
