Relief in veg mkt as potato, onion prices dropped

Pabna Correspondent :

Due to an increase in supply, relief has returned to vegetable prices in Ishwardi. Compared to last week, prices of winter vegetables have dropped by Tk 20 to Tk 50 per kilogram. At the same time, prices of new potatoes and onions have also decreased. However, no major change has been observed in the fish and chicken markets. This picture was seen on Friday (19 December) after visiting markets in Ambagan, College Road Kitchen Market, Dashuria, Arambaria, Aotapara and Notunhat areas of Ishwardi town.
Traders said that prices have fallen significantly due to the abundant supply of winter vegetables. With wholesale markets flooded with vegetables, prices are declining every day. In addition, some summer vegetables have also started arriving in the market.
Vegetable seller Atahar Mallik of Dashuria market said, “Vegetable prices are falling every day. People can fill their bags with groceries at low cost. Compared to last week, prices of potatoes and onions have also dropped a lot.”
A visit to the markets showed that among winter vegetables, beans have fallen by Tk 20 to Tk 20-30 per kg, tomatoes by Tk 40 to Tk 50-60 per kg, local carrots at Tk 40 per kg, and radish at Tk 30-40 per kg. Cauliflower is selling at Tk 20-25 per piece, cabbage at Tk 25 per kg, and bottle gourd at Tk 30-40 per piece.
Buyers expressed relief at getting vegetables at lower prices. According to them, earlier even with a pocket full of money it was hard to fill a market bag, but now essential vegetables can be bought at a low cost.
Ishwardi market buyer Mahfuzur Rahman Shipon said, “Excluding fish, I bought vegetables for just Tk 150 and the bag is full. Earlier, buying just two types of vegetables would cost more than Tk 200.”
Among summer vegetables, ridge gourd is selling at Tk 50 per kg, yardlong beans at Tk 60, eggplant (depending on variety) at Tk 40-50, taro stems at Tk 60, and bitter gourd at Tk 80 per kg. However, demand for these vegetables is relatively low.
