Jamaat calls for global action on human rights
Staff Reporter :
Marking International Human Rights Day, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman on Wednesday issued a statement underscoring the urgent need to safeguard human rights across the globe and calling for swift action to address ongoing humanitarian crises.
“10 December is International Human Rights Day. Since the UN adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, this day has been observed worldwide with great significance,” he said.
Dr Rahman emphasised that human rights constitute a sacred responsibility and serve as a foundation for social justice, stressing that they must never be compromised for political motives or personal interests.
“Human rights are a sacred trust and the cornerstone of social justice. Violating anyone’s rights for political gain or ideological differences is unacceptable,” he said.
He further said that disagreements or differences in opinion can never justify oppression, harassment, or the denial of rights.
“Even amid social or political disputes, insulting, harassing, or abusing the rights of women or civilians is entirely unlawful and morally indefensible,” he added.
He highlighted grave human rights abuses in Gaza, Kashmir, Myanmar, and other regions.
Speaking about the crisis in Gaza, Dr Rahman said, “Today, the world is witnessing extreme human rights violations in Gaza, Kashmir, Myanmar, and elsewhere. In Gaza, Israeli forces are carrying out genocide—women, children, the elderly, students, teachers, religious figures—no one is being spared.”
Citing research from Germany’s MPIDR, he noted that as of 6 October 2025, more than 100,000 Palestinians had been killed in Gaza.
He described the humanitarian catastrophe: “Nearly 80% of Gaza’s homes have been reduced to rubble. Access to medical aid, food, and water is being deliberately blocked. Words fall short in condemning such brutality.”
Dr Rahman also denounced ongoing rights abuses in Kashmir, Myanmar’s Rakhine state, Lebanon, Ukraine, and Syria.
He called on the global community to intervene urgently, halt conflicts, and work toward sustainable solutions to international crises.
“On this International Human Rights Day, we urge the United Nations, European Union, and all humanitarian nations and organisations to act immediately—stop the wars, uphold human rights, and take meaningful steps toward a lasting resolution of the Palestinian crisis,” he concluded.
