BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman on Sunday said only BNP can prevent corruption.
“We can say with confidence that if corruption is to be prevented, only the BNP can do it.
Because we have done it in the past, and we will be able to do it in the future as well, Insha’Allah,” Tarique Rahman said.
Tarique Rahman strongly criticised Jamaat-e-Islami sayig ‘Bangladesh saw how Jamaat killed lakhs of people and dishonours women in 1971.
Referring to the context of the BNP-led government from 2001-2006, he said the BNP government created various forces and improved the law-and-order situation in the country.
Later, an autocratic regime misused those forces for political gain. Therefore, only the BNP can take control of corruption and law-and-order issues.
Tarique made the remarks virtually at the inaugural ceremony of BNP’s six-day ‘Plan to Build the Country’ programme held at the Krishibid Institution Bangladesh in the capital’s Khamarbari. BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi presided over the event.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam, among other leaders were also spoke in the programme.
Tarique Rahman said that after the country’s independence and after the anti-autocracy movement of the nineties, whenever the responsibility of running the country was given to the BNP during various crises, the BNP changed the situation and improved conditions. At this moment, we expect an election in the next two months.
The autocratic regime that remained in power for the last 16 years and was ousted through a people’s movement-how it has destroyed every sector of the country-is something we can feel in every aspect of our lives.
He said, “The people are the source of all our political power. Then why should we not stand before the people? Our objective is centered on the country and its people. Whatever decision the people give, we will accept it wholeheartedly.
Two and a half to three years ago, when the autocratic regime was suppressing people’s freedom of speech and political rights with an iron fist, we presented our ‘Reform Proposal’ before the people-known as the 31-Point Proposal-defying that intimidation.
He further said, “Since after last August 5, for more than a year now, we have been saying repeatedly that the coming days will not be easy.
Very difficult times lie ahead. Conspiracies are taking place in different places. Only the people of the country, and the BNP together with the people, can resist these conspiracies.
The only way to resist these conspiracies is-democracy, democracy, and democracy. If the people’s opinion is upheld, conspiracies can be confronted.”
Tarique Rahman said, “For the people, we will commit to whatever we can do. No one can commit to things that are beyond their control.
Apart from these, Tarique Rahman strongly criticised Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami for scattering propaganda against the BNP.
He said the people of Bangladesh saw how Jamaat killed lakhs of people and dishonoured women in 1971 for political gains.
He also accused Jamaat of misleading people with false promises, including claiming they could ‘guarantee heaven in return for votes.
“We hear some people or some groups nowadays – in different places or on social media – saying ‘We have seen this party and that party, so now give this party [Jamaat] a chance’. But the people of this country already saw this party in 1971,” Tarique said.
