A massive fire broke out at the Samir Kar Market in the New Palpara area of Narayanganj city, reducing 35 shops to ashes.

The blaze started around 5:00 a.m. on Saturday in the hosiery and body-knitting section of the market.

According to the affected shop owners, around 35 hosiery factories and body-knitting shops were completely burnt.

They estimate the damage at around Tk 3 crore, while goods worth nearly Tk 10 crore were successfully saved.

Abdullah Al Arifin, Deputy Assistant Director of Narayanganj Fire Service, said, “After receiving the alert, five units of the fire service rushed to the scene and brought the fire under control after an hour of effort. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.”

He also said, “Initial investigations suggest that the fire may have started from an electrical short circuit.

The narrow roads and shortage of water made the firefighting operation somewhat difficult.”

An investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause of the fire and assess the full extent of the damage.
