No sugar imports if domestic stocks adequate: Adilur
Staff Reporter :
Industries Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan on Friday said the government will refrain from importing sugar as long as domestic warehouses hold sufficient stock.
“State-owned sugar mills can return to profitability through modernization, cultivation of improved sugarcane varieties, adoption of advanced farming methods, product diversification, and strong governance. If we can ensure adequate stocks of locally produced sugar, there will be no need to import,” he said.
He made the remarks while inaugurating the 88th sugarcane crushing season of Carew & Company (Bangladesh) Ltd in Darshana this afternoon.
Calling Carew & Company a historic state-run industrial institution, Adilur said the enterprise plays an important role in the national economy by producing sugar, spirit, vinegar, organic fertilizer, and several other products.
Speaking as a special guest, Khulna Range DIG Md Rezaul Haque emphasised that the commitment and hard work of farmers and workers are vital for expanding the company and increasing production.
The event, organised by the Ministry of Industries, was attended by Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation Chairman (Additional Secretary) Rashidul Hasan, Chuadanga Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Kamal Hossain, Superintendent of Police Mohammad Monirul Islam, Carew Managing Director Rabbik Hasan, along with sugarcane growers, mill officials, employees, and labour leaders.
Crest awards were handed out to the top-performing sugarcane growers.
For the 2025–26 crushing season, Carew & Company has set a target to process 76,000 metric tons of sugarcane and produce 4,256 metric tons of sugar.
