A 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck China’s Xinjiang region on Thursday afternoon, shaking areas near Akqi County close to the Kyrgyzstan border, according to regional seismic authorities.
The quake hit at 3:44 pm local time (0744 GMT), with preliminary reports placing its depth at around 10 kilometers — considered shallow and typically associated with stronger surface-level impacts.
So far, no casualties or significant structural damage have been reported. Emergency response teams have been deployed to the affected areas.
and officials are continuing to monitor aftershocks.
Xinjiang, which sits atop several active fault lines, is among China’s most earthquake-prone regions.
Thursday’s tremor follows a series of recent quakes, including a magnitude 4.7 event on November 6 and a magnitude 4.4 quake on November 17, underscoring persistent tectonic activity in the area.
Seismologists say the latest quake may have resulted from the release of accumulated stress in the Earth’s crust, although aftershocks remain possible. Residents in nearby communities reported brief but noticeable shaking.
Authorities have urged the public to stay alert and adhere to official safety instructions.
