With the slogan “Butterflies take to the sky, nature finds a new rhythm” the 15th Butterfly Festival will be held at Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Friday, December 5, to promote butterfly conservation and raise public awareness.

The 15th edition of the annual Butterfly Fair will be held at Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Friday, December 5, with the slogan “Butterflies take to the sky, nature finds a new rhythm.”
The fair will be organised by the Entomology branch of the university’s zoology department.

The matter was announced in a press conference held on Wednesday at the teachers’ lounge of the university’s central cafeteria. Professor Md Monowar Hossain, convener of the fair, confirmed the details.

This year’s fair will see the launch of the third edition of Butterflies of Bangladesh, featuring photographs of 360 species along with information on butterfly biology and DNA-based identification. The Butterfly Park and Research Centre will also showcase butterfly-friendly plants, breeding grounds, and an open garden.

Professor Hossain urged the university administration to designate protected areas for butterfly conservation and to scientifically label trees on campus with their botanical names.
Syeda Rizwana Hasan, adviser to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, will attend the fair as chief guest.

The day-long programme will begin with a colourful rally, followed by a puppet show on butterfly stories and an origami parade.

Other attractions include a children’s art competition, a quiz on butterflies and nature, documentary screenings, a butterfly market, photography exhibitions and contests, kite flying in butterfly shapes, a debate competition, and a butterfly identification contest.

The Butterfly Award 2025 will be conferred on wildlife expert and conservationist Dr Ali Reza Khan for his contributions to butterfly conservation. The Butterfly Young Enthusiast Award 2025 will be jointly awarded to JU zoology students Sabbir Ahmed Shahariar Rabbi Tanmoy and Nure Afsari.

Cute is the title sponsor of this year’s fair, with support from Prokriti O Jibon Foundation, International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Arannayak Foundation, and the Bangladesh Forest Department.

Channel i and Radio Bhumi are media partners.
