BADC starts work to resolve waterlogging

To rescue agricultural land from waterlogging and restore water flow in the canals, Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) has started canal digging activities in Barishal region.

As part of that development project Khairul Alam Sumon, Deputy Commissioner Barishal, on Tuesday afternoon inaugurated the excavation of a 2-kilometer canal in Mirabari area of Char Kaua union of Barishal Sadar upazila.

At that time, he said through this canal digging, not only will agricultural land be rescued from waterlogging in the area, but farmers will also be benefitted by producing agricultural products.
All the filled canals in the Barishal region will be dug in phases for providing necessary irrigation to agricultural land and increasing crop production the DC added.

Among others, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Lusikant Hajong, LGED Executive Engineer Al Imran, Senior Assistant Engineer Rashed Khan, BADC Assistant Engineer Ataye Rabbi, were present at the programme.

BADC Barishal District Office sources said through this 2-kilometer-long excavation of the canal will be excavated to a width of 30 feet and a depth of 9 feet.

At the same time, culverts will be constructed on the road here.
As a result, 2,500 acres of agricultural land will be indirectly freed from waterlogging and could produce more food.

BADC further sources said that in the last two years, 65 kilometers of canals have been dug for irrigation facilities in agricultural land and at least 30 kilometers of canals will be dug this year in Barishal region.

As a result, 30 thousand hectares of agricultural land will be freed from waterlogging.
A project to dig 300 kilometers of canals at a cost of Tk 350 crore has been taken up in three and a half years until 2026, said BADC Executive Engineer Wahid Murad.

When this canal digging project is completed in December 2026, food production in the Barishal region will increase at a huge rate.

Barishal Sadar Upazila Agriculture Officer Uttam Bhowmik said that as a result of ending waterlogging in this region it will be possible to produce various crops including paddy worth about Tk 2 crore annually in Charkaua Union alone.
