BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday said that a favourable environment has now taken shape for holding the upcoming national election.

Speaking at a joining ceremony at the BNP chairperson’s political office in Gulshan, he said, “Under the leadership of Muhammad Yunus, the interim government has already formed several reform commissions. We have endorsed a reform charter through these bodies. As a result, a situation conducive to organizing a free and fair election has been created in the country.”

Reza Kibria, son of the late Awami League veteran and former finance minister Shah A M S Kibria, officially joined the BNP in the event. Mirza Fakhrul added, “The interim government has announced that the national polls will take place in February 2026, and preparations are progressing accordingly. We are optimistic that the people will use this opportunity to elect a truly representative parliament-and, through it, establish a democratic government chosen by the people.”

“After overcoming countless obstacles, enduring struggles, sacrifices, and bloodshed, we have finally arrived at a moment of possibility. Following this mass uprising, we now have the chance to rebuild Bangladesh anew,” Fakhrul noted.

On the health condition of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, Fakhrul said she remains in critical condition while receiving treatment at a hospital in Dhaka, with both local and international specialists monitoring her care.

He said the nation is deeply worried about her health. “She is gravely ill. The entire nation is praying for her recovery. We pray to Allah for her good health so she may return to us and continue her work for the country,” he said.

Fakhrul also mentioned that all medical decisions have been entrusted to Dr Zahid, who will brief the media when required. “What I can confirm is that her condition is serious, and our doctors are doing everything possible. Experts from home and abroad are involved in her treatment,” he added.

BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed was also present at the programme.
