Govt activates emergency response cell for quake victims
Staff reporter :
The government has activated a nationwide emergency response following the recent earthquake, with the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief establishing a central response cell under the Disaster Management Directorate to coordinate rescue, relief, and information-gathering efforts.
The centre, launched on Friday, is operating round-the-clock to compile district-wise preliminary damage assessments.
Officials are maintaining continuous communication with deputy commissioners, ensuring that updates on casualties, infrastructure damage, and immediate needs are relayed in real time. Citizens can contact the emergency response centre by calling 0258811651.
According to initial reports from Dhaka, Narayanganj, Gazipur, Narsingdi, and Magura districts, the earthquake has so far resulted in 10 deaths and 461 injuries.
These figures are expected to evolve as more detailed assessments come in from remote and densely populated areas.
District-wise reported casualties include: Dhaka district (including the capital city): 4 deaths, 59 injuries, Narayanganj: 1 death, 18 injuries, Narsingdi: 5 deaths, 110 injuries, Gazipur: 252 injuries, Magura: 22 injuries Authorities noted that many of the injuries were caused by stampedes, falling objects, and structural damage during the tremor.
Several buildings have reported cracks, prompting safety inspections by local administrations.
To support affected families, the government has already started disbursing emergency financial assistance through district administrations.
Under the initial relief package, the family of each deceased victim is receiving Tk25,000, while each injured person is being provided Tk15,000 to cover immediate treatment and recovery expenses.
Hospitals and clinics in the affected districts have been instructed to prioritise quake-related patients.
Many of the injured have already been released after receiving primary treatment, though authorities say full medical and structural assessments will take time.
