JCI Dhaka Sparks held the fourth phase of its social awareness initiative, “KushumKotha: Breaking Out of Period Poverty (Phase-4)”, with the theme “Let’s break the prejudice by knowing what’s right”, at Dhaka Ahsania Mohila Mission High School.

The project, organized in collaboration with Senora Confidence, aims to raise awareness among adolescent girls about menstrual hygiene and proper sanitation.

This phase engaged more than 60 girls, educating them on essential menstrual health practices, dispelling myths, and promoting safe and hygienic habits.

Discussions were also held with school authorities and management to introduce sustainable hygiene solutions and health check-ups, moving away from harmful and unsanitary practices.

Local president Saiful Islam Akash presided over the session, which was coordinated by Fazana Sultana Mow, CoC of the project.

Sigma Haider, director in charge and adviser of JCI Dhaka Sparks, also facilitated the arrangements.

As special guest, Bozlur Rahman, chief translator at the UAE Embassy, shared valuable remarks.

Guests Dr Sharmeen Farhana Liza, gynaecologist & former medical team lead, Shurjer Hashi Clinic, Kazi Homaira Nirjhar, co-founder & managing director, Onupran Preschool and Early Childhood Development Centre, and Tanzina Nasrin Mumu, teacher & admin officer, Shahid Cadet School and College, were also present and expressed their commitment to the cause.

In our society, many adolescent girls still face taboos, harassment, and social exclusion related to menstruation.

Issues such as poor-quality sanitary materials, cultural stigma, inadequate WASH facilities, and lack of privacy in schools and homes continue to contribute to unsafe menstrual hygiene practices.

Founding local president of JCI Dhaka Shahmina Isha Mannan, 2023 local president Noor E Alam Bhuiyan, and other distinguished board members also graced the event.

Since its inception, one of the core goals of JCI Dhaka Sparks has been to establish a sustainable menstrual hygiene and awareness program for underprivileged adolescent girls.
