Postponing polls would mean disaster for country: Fakhrul
Staff Reporter :
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that a conspiracy is underway to foil and delay the election. “Postponing this election would mean our ruin – the ruin of this country,” he warned.
He made the remarks on Monday while addressing a views-exchange meeting with freedom fighters and their children at the Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila Muktijoddha Complex.
The meeting was organized by the Thakurgaon District Unit Command of the Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad (Freedom Fighters’ Council).
Mirza Fakhrul said, “Now, what the country needs most is an elected government. This government must hold the election soon. We respect and admire Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus.
He should announce the election date without any further delay so that an elected government can take over – that is our demand.”
He further said, “Do not let anyone create division among us. Do not let anyone divide Hindus and Muslims.
We – Hindus and Muslims – are brothers; we live together. We have always walked together. No one should be allowed to divide us.”
Mentioning his age, Mirza Fakhrul said, “I’ve grown old. I can’t always say everything I want to. But remember one thing – this country is ours, this soil is ours, these people are ours. We must protect our people and move forward on the path of prosperity.”
The BNP Secretary General said, “The proclaimer of our independence, martyred President Ziaur Rahman, always thought about the freedom fighters.
Our party Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia established the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs, through which freedom fighters and their families now receive allowances. We have always provided facilities and support for freedom fighters, and we will continue to do so in the future.”
The views-exchange meeting was presided over by Nur Karim, Convener of the Thakurgaon District Freedom Fighters’ Unit Command.
It was also attended by Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad Central Command Council Convener Naeem Jahangir, Member-Secretary Sadek Ahmad Khan, member and former State Minister Monsur Ali Sarkar, Thakurgaon District BNP President Mirza Faisal Amin, General Secretary Poigam Ali, and other leaders.
