DMP bans phone use for on-duty cops

Staff Reporter :

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has issued a new directive prohibiting police, except for those in charge, from using mobile phones while on duty.

This measure is aimed at ensuring effective law enforcement and maintaining public safety, especially during the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election.

The order, signed by DMP Commissioner Sheikh Md Sajjat Ali on Monday, highlights the growing concerns over the use of mobile phones by police officers during their shifts.

“It has been observed that such distractions interfere with the officers’ ability to stay vigilant and perform their duties effectively, putting both their own safety and the public’s at risk despite their visibility,” the order read.

The directive specifically addresses the need to maintain order, control law and order situations, and prevent activities by banned organizations.

It stresses that, for the smooth conduct of the elections and the preservation of security in the capital, no police officer, other than the designated in-charge, should use their mobile phone while performing official duties.

The order also warns that any police officer found violating this directive will face disciplinary action, as such behaviour is considered a breach of police conduct.
Appropriate measures will be taken against those who fail to comply with the new regulation, the order said.
