Sexual harassment allegations against BRU teachers

A female student of the same department has submitted a 31-page handwritten sexual harassment complaint against Md. Shamim Hossain, assistant professor and assistant proctor of the Department of Geography and Environmental Sciences of Begum Rokeya University (BRU) in Rangpur.

On the other hand, a female student of the same department has also filed a sexual harassment complaint against Associate Professor Dr. Shakibul Islam in the Department of Disaster Management.

On Sunday (November 2), two students submitted this complaint to the university proctor and student counseling office. The matter was confirmed by the university’s student advisor and member secretary of the sexual harassment cell, Dr. Ilias Pramanik.

Earlier, last Thursday (October 30), students of the 2020-21 session of the Department of Geography and Environmental Sciences submitted a complaint letter against the teacher to the department head. There, they mentioned the teacher’s sexual harassment.

including refraining from all types of work, including class examinations.
In the complaint, the victim female student of the Department of Geography and Environmental Sciences mentioned that she made multiple complaints against the teacher, including making bad gestures, making bad suggestions, and making bad jokes.

Although she called Assistant Professor Md. Shamim Hossain in the Department of Geography and Environmental Sciences several times, he did not answer the phone.

When asked about the complaint, Dr. Shakibul Islam of the Disaster Management Department said, “I am not aware of this. I am inquiring about you. Please do not write any comments on me!”

In this regard, the Department Head of the Department of Geography and Environmental Sciences, Md. Mostafizur Rahman, said, “We received a complaint last Thursday. There, we received a complaint letter signed by 31 students of the 2020-21 session against this teacher.

There, they asked to stop all classes and exams of the accused teacher. We held an emergency meeting in the department on this issue. Some female students raised serious complaints there. We will hold another meeting on the matter and take the next decision.

Head of the Disaster Management Department, Dr. Emdadul Haque, said that a complaint of sexual harassment has also come to the department. One of our research students made this complaint.

One has to work in the room for a long time. Even working alone, such a complaint of sexual harassment comes. There is a meeting in the department today at 12 noon on the matter.

In this regard, the university’s proctor, Dr. Md. Ferdous Rahman, said that the complaint coming in will be decided in a meeting within the next seven days.

Member Secretary of the Sexual Harassment Cell, Dr. Ilias Pramanik, said that a complaint has come. Action will be taken in light of the sexual harassment cell formed by the university.
