Speaking after the announcement, newly elected President Enamul Haque stressed the need to simplify gold imports, saying, “There is a system for importing gold, but due to the complexities, no one wants to purchase at such high costs.”
He added that it is important to spread awareness that legitimate jewelers are not involved in smuggling. “Smugglers do not enter the formal gold trade, and traders do not smuggle. Until the import process becomes easier, we will push to reintroduce the baggage rule to ease gold supply.”
