Ctg Port disposes of long-stored hazardous goods
Business Report :
In a major effort to ensure port safety and environmental protection, the Chattogram Port Authority (CPA) has safely destroyed 19 containers of dangerous goods that had been left unattended at the port for years. The operation took place over the weekend of October 25-26, 2025, under strict supervision and environmental compliance.
The destruction process was overseen by an inter-agency committee led by Mohammad Nurullah Nuri, Additional Divisional Commissioner (General) of Chattogram Division, with participation from the Department of Environment, Department of Explosives, Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), National Security Intelligence (NSI), Chattogram Port Authority, Chattogram Metropolitan Police, and Chattogram Customs House.
According to the National Board of Revenue (NBR), the work began at 9:00 am on Saturday and continued uninterrupted until 9:30 pm on Sunday. Personnel from the Fire Service and Civil Defence, Ansar, and local police provided safety and support throughout the operation.
The containers destroyed included 16 of Uncoated Calcium Carbonate, one of Orange Emulsion, one of Sweet Whey Powder, and one of Skimmed Milk Powder.Officials said the destruction was carried out in an environmentally compliant manner to prevent chemical contamination or fire incidents.
This operation follows a similar effort in October 2024, when the Chattogram Customs House and CPA removed and destroyed four containers of highly flammable hazardous cargo that had been stored at the port for nearly 14 years.
In a related development, the NBR has issued a directive to inventory approximately 6,069 containers, equivalent to nearly 10,000 TEUs, at Chattogram Port for disposal through auction to reduce congestion.
The NBR expressed optimism that the Chattogram Customs House will continue its efforts efficiently to reduce the container backlog and enhance port operations. Officials also reiterated that the destruction of hazardous goods left unattended at the port will continue as a priority with the cooperation of all relevant agencies.
