BD to receive $2.5 billion in ADB funding for 10 dev projects

BSS:

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) plans to scale up its investments in Bangladesh in the coming years to benefit more people and strengthen local development, ADB Country Director Hoe Yun Jeong said.

Speaking to BSS during a visit to project sites in Patuakhali and Khulna, Jeong said the Manila-based multilateral lender aims to replicate successful projects across the country, working closely with the government, city authorities, and local stakeholders. “Our goal is clear: expand investments and bring meaningful development impacts to pourashavas, cities, and communities,” he said, reports BSS.

Jeong highlighted the ongoing Coastal Town Climate Resilience Project, which addresses salinity issues in coastal towns while boosting economic activities. He said the ADB’s urban sector projects follow an “integrated approach,” linking urbanization and industrialization to turn towns into growth centers that benefit both the local economy and residents.

The Country Director also confirmed that discussions are underway with the government regarding the next phase of city region development projects, which will be reflected in the upcoming Country Partnership Framework (CPF) 2026-2030. Officials from Bangladesh’s Economic Relations Division (ERD) said the ADB is likely to provide around $2.5 billion next year for at least 10 development projects, with additional funds kept as standby for emergencies or priority projects.

The ADB, Bangladesh’s second-largest multilateral development partner, currently has a portfolio of around $11.8 billion across 51 ongoing projects, spanning sectors such as power, energy, transport, education, agriculture, health, water resources, and local governance. Since 1973, the bank has provided a total of $33.95 billion in loans and $571 million in grants to Bangladesh.
Jeong emphasised that ADB will continue to focus on climate-resilient development, urban and industrial growth, and partnerships with local governments to ensure sustainable socio-economic benefits for communities across Bangladesh.
