‘Interim govt should now operate in full caretaker mode’

Staff Reporter :

BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury on Wednesday said the interim government should now fully transform into a caretaker administration to ensure neutrality and facilitate a peaceful transition of power through a credible national election.
“We want a peaceful and democratic transition.

The interim government must now act entirely as a caretaker authority, and anyone considered controversial should step aside, as their continued presence could cast doubt on the process,” Khasru said while addressing a discussion at the National Press Club.

He added, “Such a step will send a strong signal that the interim administration has embraced its rightful, neutral position.”

The discussion, titled “The Importance of the Upcoming National Election in Protecting Bangladesh’s Independence and Sovereignty,” was organised by Jatiyatabadi Muktijoddha Dal.

Referring to ongoing concerns about the interim government’s neutrality, Khasru said these doubts have surfaced for a number of reasons.

BNP wants interim govt to act neutrally, did not mention caretaker: Adviser Asif Nazrul “We have witnessed numerous transfers and postings, and it seems some individuals are exerting undue influence over government decisions,” he observed.

“That is why we insist that anyone whose impartiality is in question, or who plans to contest the next election, should not remain in the administration

. Those linked to political parties cannot credibly perform the duties of a caretaker government.”

Khasru further emphasised that since the interim administration is tasked with overseeing the national polls, it must now adopt all the defining features of a caretaker government as envisioned in the Constitution.

“The interim government should limit itself to routine affairs and refrain from making major policy decisions at this stage,” he said.

“Taking significant actions now could create unnecessary controversies and undermine public trust.”
