Islami bank leads day-long events to promote a cashless Bangladesh

Bangladesh Bank and Islami Bank Bangladesh PLC jointly organized a colourful event in Chattogram on Wednesday to promote the “Cashless Bangladesh Initiative Expansion Campaign.”
The day-long programme began with a roadshow from Agrabad intersection to Hotel Agrabad, where a seminar and stall exhibition were held to encourage wider use of digital payment systems,according to press release.

Arif Hossain Khan, Executive Director and Spokesperson of Bangladesh Bank, attended as the chief guest, while Rafeza Akter Kanta, Director of the Payment Systems Department, presided over the event. Other guests included Md. Mokbul Hossain, Executive Director of Bangladesh Bank, and Md. Altaf Hossain, Additional Managing Director of Islami Bank.

The event featured a video message from the Bangladesh Bank Governor and a presentation outlining the goals and progress of the Cashless Bangladesh initiative. Two local entrepreneurs, Md. Gias Uddin and Abul Kalam Azad, shared how digital payments have helped their businesses operate faster and more securely.

Later, guests visited stalls from 18 Bangla QR-affiliated banks, where demonstrations showed how QR code-based transactions are making daily payments easier and safer.

In his speech, Arif Hossain Khan said Bangladesh spends around Tk20,000 crore every year on cash management – a cost that can be cut through digital transactions. “When payments are made digitally, the risks and expenses tied to handling cash are reduced,” he said.

The event highlighted Bangladesh Bank’s commitment to expanding digital payments, improving financial inclusion, and moving the country toward a modern, efficient, and secure cashless economy.
